Hiking near Sougia

Sougia is an excellent starting point for exploring the hiking trails of southwest Crete. The landscape changes dramatically within short distances, taking you from the coast into deep gorges, mountain paths and remote areas surrounded by nature.

Whether you are looking for a challenging full day hike or simply want to spend a few hours walking through the Cretan landscape, there are several routes worth discovering.

Walk part of the E4 European path

One of the highlights for hikers visiting southwest Crete is the E4 European long distance path.

The Cretan section of the E4 crosses some of the island’s most impressive landscapes, and several routes pass through the wider area of Sougia and the south coast.

One particularly beautiful coastal section connects Sougia with Agia Roumeli, combining wild scenery, views over the Libyan Sea and some of the most remote stretches of coastline in Crete.

The E4 is not a single easy walking trail. Conditions and difficulty vary considerably between sections, so hikers should always choose a route according to their experience and check current trail and weather conditions before setting out.

Discover Samaria Gorge

No hiking guide to southwest Crete would be complete without Samaria Gorge.

Located in the White Mountains, Samaria is one of Crete’s best known natural landmarks and offers a completely different experience from the coastal trails.

The classic route takes hikers through the dramatic landscape of the gorge before reaching Agia Roumeli on the south coast.

Because visiting Samaria involves transportation planning as well as the hike itself, we will cover everything you need to know in our dedicated Samaria Gorge guide.

Hike through Agia Irini Gorge

For travellers looking for another beautiful gorge experience, Agia Irini Gorge is an excellent choice.

Its wooded landscape, impressive rock formations and peaceful atmosphere make it a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of southwest Crete.

Its location also makes it particularly relevant for guests staying in the Sougia area.

We will cover the route, access and practical information separately in our Agia Irini Gorge guide.

Mountains in the morning, Libyan Sea in the afternoon

One of the things that makes this part of Crete special is how easily a day in the mountains can end beside the sea.

After exploring a gorge or hiking along a mountain trail, you can head towards Sougia for a swim in the Libyan Sea, enjoy a relaxed meal by the coast and return to the quiet countryside in the evening.

It is this combination of mountains, hiking and sea that makes southwest Crete such a rewarding destination for travellers who prefer nature and outdoor experiences.
